Set it up
A server passes to a receiver. A defender begins a yard behind the receiver and starts with controlled pressure.
How to play
The receiver checks the defender, then chooses to turn into space or return the ball to the server. A safe return counts as a successful decision.
Make it easier
Have the defender announce which shoulder they will cover.
Add a challenge
Let the defender choose their side as the pass travels.
What to watch for
Every reception becomes a forced turn. Ask the receiver when protecting and returning the ball is the useful choice.
Take it into a game
Finish with a short small-sided game and look for the same receiving decision without the activity’s extra conditions. Ask a player to describe one moment when it helped. Keep the next round simple if the skill disappears under pressure.
KEEP IT SIMPLELook for space. Keep the ball within reach.
