Set it up
Two pairs stand on opposite banks. One defender works inside the river and cannot leave it initially.
How to play
A bank keeps possession until a ground passing lane opens to the far bank. The defender intercepts rather than charging receivers. Rotate the defender after a minute.
Make it easier
Widen the river crossing area or use a walking defender.
Add a challenge
Use two defenders and require receivers to move along their bank.
What to watch for
Passers force balls straight through the defender. Move the ball sideways first to create a new line.
Take it into a game
Finish with a short small-sided game and look for the same passing decision without the activity’s extra conditions. Ask a player to describe one moment when it helped. Keep the next round simple if the skill disappears under pressure.
KEEP IT SIMPLELook for space. Keep the ball within reach.
