Choosing a soccer ball size for a youth team

The standard full-size ball specifications are set in Law 2. Youth competitions can use modified sizes, so your team’s required size should come from its current competition handbook. Do not infer eligibility or ball size solely from a child’s school grade.

Teach it with a simple activity

Ask the league for the required size and inflation guidance before buying a team supply. Label practice balls and inspect them for damage before use.

A situation to discuss

Two leagues use different formats for similarly aged children. Confirm the equipment requirements for the league in which your team actually plays.

Avoid this misunderstanding

Training comfort and match eligibility are different considerations. A useful practice adaptation does not automatically change the match specification.

Confirm your local version

Ask your league which rulebook applies this season and where its modifications are published. Keep that document with your match notes. When a match decision is disputed, follow the competition’s process and use qualified referee education for a detailed interpretation.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Know the general rule. Confirm the version your team plays.
