Kickoff rules for young players

At kickoff, the ball is stationary on the center mark and becomes live when kicked and clearly moving. Except for the kicker, players must be in their own half; opponents must respect the required distance. The ball may be kicked in any direction.

Teach it with a simple activity

Arrange a kickoff and ask each player to check one condition before the whistle. Then play a short first-pass sequence and rotate the kickoff taker.

A situation to discuss

The taker passes backward to a teammate. Backward movement does not make the kickoff illegal.

Avoid this misunderstanding

Use the competition’s distance and field dimensions for your age group rather than copying a full-size field blindly.

Confirm your local version

Ask your league which rulebook applies this season and where its modifications are published. Keep that document with your match notes. When a match decision is disputed, follow the competition’s process and use qualified referee education for a detailed interpretation.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Know the general rule. Confirm the version your team plays.
